On 18th December, 1914, 23 Brigade of 8th Division were involved in an attack on Neuve-Chapelle synchronising with other attacks by IV Corps. The attack was carried out by the 2nd Devonshire battalion with 2nd West Yorkshire in support. A British artillery barrage opened up at 4.15 pm and a quarter of an hour later, three companies of 2nd Devonshire advanced against the Moated Grange. The left company got hung up on the wire and suffered heavily, the centre one captured 150 yards of German trench but the right company never advanced at all.  In the evening they were relieved by 2nd West Yorkshire. One of their casualties during this operation was George Monk.
